While the internet is a great resource for tracing your family history, there are still plenty of reasons to visit your local archives. Many references and resources are still only available on paper. From Civil War records and tax records to special collections, there is much more to genealogy than Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.

Maureen Vaughan is a professional researcher and archaeologist with 15 years of experience. She completed her PhD in Archaeology in 2015 and has spent the last decade working with museums and government agencies across the country as researcher and genealogist. She was born and raised in Brentwood, TN.
